In the late 1960's, the majority of NATO country militaries conducted their own research into air-mobility and airborne vehicles - in the UK it was for example a project called Prodigal. In the US, the project was called Airborne Freedom and it resulted in the Gavin ACAV.
The Gavin ACAV is the ultimate upgrade to the aging M113 vehicle family. The original M113 was built of lightweight aluminum, so it made complete sense to convert this vehicle to become airmobile – after all, the original M113 only weighed four tons more than the AH-64 attack helicopter. With the use of modern lightweight alloys in its construction, the weight was reduced further. In order to enhance the vehicle’s capabilities, aluminum wings, were attached to the original hull with the final step being the installation of the Honeywell AGT1500 gas turbine engine enabled it to achieve take-off velocity. This choice of engine also eased the logistics burden, using the same components as the M1 Abrams tank, although the larger power pack did require a slight decrease in the carrying capacity of the troop compartment down to eight men.
During its development, a change to the unexciting M113 designation was proposed by 1Lt. M. S. Parks. He suggested using the name of “Gavin” in honor of James Maurice Gavin, the commander of the 82nd Airborne in Second World War to correctly reflect the airborne nature of the vehicle.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the Gavin ACAV is its ability to fly, swiftly delivering troops behind enemy lines and saving the army millions of USD on transportation costs, since the vehicle – capable of flight by itself – does not need to be transported by standard airplanes. On the ground, this vehicle acts as a standard infantry fighting vehicle but once in the air, while not the most agile aircraft, its armored hull is immune to most anti-aircraft weapons that rely on shrapnel and blast. Its twin 25mm Bushmaster cannons allow it to hunt for other aircraft and even fast jets and fighter interceptors risk being shot down by prowling Gavins thanks to the pair of Sidewinder missiles installed on the wings.
The original M113 was rated as having amphibious abilities and of course the improvements made to the Gavin only added to that – the M113 is now fully capable of operating as a gunboat.
